There, you can stand anywhere on the western slope of the island and look across the International Date Line to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Diomede\">Big Diomede Island<\/a>, part of Russia, 2 miles away.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpics\/2008\/diomede1.png\" width=550px><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Google Earth view of the town of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Diomede\">Diomede, Alaska<\/a>, population 146:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpics\/2008\/diomede2.png\" width=550px><\/p>\n<p>(and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geo.umass.edu\/projects\/chukotka\/dioimag.html\"> here<\/a> are some <a href=\"http:\/\/arctic.bio.utk.edu\/AEO\/Image_Descriptions.htm\">real pictures<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia notes, with citation, that Senator Ted Stevens is the only state elected official to ever visit the island.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, quite the hotbed of international diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><i>(Actually I think it sounds like an intriguing place.
